Abstract

Abstract The reaction of methyl propionyl acetate with formamidine acetate in the presence of sodium methoxide produces 6-ethyl-4 (3H)-pyrimidinone (1) in 67% isolated yield. Reaction with phosphorus oxychloride and subsequent catalytic hydrogenolysis affords 4- ethylpyrimidine (3) in 41% overall yield.
