Abstract

The racemic forms of two sapogenin degradation products (I11 and IV) related to a methyl- branched aliphatic hydroxy-acid have been synthesised.(-J-)-5-Acetoxy-4-methylpentanoic acid (111) was obtained by oxidation of 2-methylhex-5-en-l-y1 acetate (V; R= Ac) and was
