Abstract

Summary A convenient synthesis of &-aspartic acid is described. a-Amino-y-hydroxybutyric acid (or the lactone hydrobromide) prepared from y-butyrolactone was benzoylated to give a- benzamido-y-hydroxybutyric acid. This compound was oxidized by alkaline potassium permangan-ate to benzamido-aspartic acid, from which dl-aspartic acid was obtained by hydrolysis.
