Crafts ring-closure of the amino acid occurs at the position para to the amido group, rather than ortho, and that the oxidation of IVa takes place at the methylene para to the amido group, since only by both of these reactions following the designated courses can such an identity occur. Also, it may be noted that the ultraviolet spectrum of the compound is similar to that of p-aminoacetophenone, but different from those of the ortho and meta i~ omers.~
