The reaction of methyl isocyanate with phenols, thiophenols, and thiols in the presence of potassium t-butoxide occurs readily to afford, depending on the stoichiometry, either the corresponding carbamates and thiocarbamates or the corresponding 2, 4- dialkylallophanates and 2, 4-dialkylthioallophanates.
