Hydrolysis of I1 gives 8-(ary1oxy) arylidenemalonic acids V, which on treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid or trifluoroacetic acid-trifluoroacetic anhydride give flavone-3-carboxylic acids and related compounds VI.
