Abstract: The irradiation of 1, 3, 6, 8-tetraphenylcycIooctatetraene (I) yields a photoisomer. This material, which behaves as a single substance in most tests, was ultimately shown to be a 1: l mixture of 1, 2, 4, 7-tetraphenylcyclooctatetraene (XV) and 2, 5, 7, 8- tetraphenylbicyclo [4.2. 0] octatriene (VIII) in mobile equilibrium at 25 OC.
