Compartmentalization is thought to be crucial to the development of evolvable genetic systems in the origins of life.[1–3] A wide range of surfactant assemblies can form spontaneously depending on conditions and the type of amphiphile, but only bilayer structures such as vesicles are suitable for genetic compartmentalization.
