Abstract

Results To our knowledge, the only reported photoadditions of phenols have utilized their methyl ethers. 3JJ8 In the case of free phenols, we expected that the ring cycloaddition might not occur because of the acidic hydroxyl group. However, irradiation of 2-naphthol and acrylonitrile in isopropyl alcohol-tert-butyl alcohol mixture gave the readily isolable cyclobutanol 3.
