Abstract

At first we examined the reaction of ethyl 2-benzylbuta-2,3-dienoate (1a) and 3-oxo-3-phenylpropanenitrile (2a) at 80 °C in DMF using one equivalent of K 2 CO 3 as promoter. The corresponding pyrone 3a was obtained unambiguously in 34% yield (Table [1] , entry 1). With this encouraging result, various reaction conditions including the solvent, temperature, and the amount of K 2 CO 3 were tested to improve the yield of the expected product.
