Abstract: The rates of hydrolysis of ethyl 2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl carbonate have been determined in HzO at 30". Two pH-independent regions are present in the pH-rate constant profile. The rate constant for the pH-independent reaction at higher pH is 50 times greater than that for reaction at lower pH. The former reaction is most likely a phenoxide ion catalyzed attack of H1O at the ester carbonyl rather than a hydroxide ion catalyzed ...
