Summary: High diastereofacial selectivity is observed in the intermolecular pinacol cross- coupling of a, a-disubstituted a-(diphenylphosphinoy1) acetaldehydes with saturated aldehydes. The diols obtained from these reactions are converted to (E)-allylic alcohols via a Horner-Wittig elimination reaction.
