Abstract The rate of intermolecular photodimerization of amphiphilic anthracenes was largely affected by the substitution to anthracene nucleus, both in monolayer assemblies and in MeOH solutions. A larger substituent effect was observed in monolayer assemblies compared with those in solutions.
