Abstract γ-and ω-hydroxyalkane-1-thiols, in many cases easily accessible over the chlorohydrins, are converted to γ-and ω-chloroalkylsulfonyl chlorides by the combined action of chlorine and water. A mechanism is suggested. This new synthesis method provides an easy way to obtain sultams.
