Abstract: A nitrone-based entry into the tropane class of alkaloids is described. Syntheses of pseudotropine and dl-cocaine are discussed. The synthetic utility and the high degree of regiochernical and stereochemical control inherent in the nitrone cycloadditions are stressed.
