Abstract

Eleven methyl-substituted 1-phenylcyclohexanols and the unsubstituted parent compound have been synthesized and arranged in the order of their dehydration rates in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid under identical conditions. Evidence is presented which demonstrates that carbon skeleton rearrangements do not occur during dehydration. Examination of the relative dehydration rates indicates that the presence of ortho or para ...
