The oxidative coupling of 1-naphthol by means of ferric chloride was first reported by Dianin. l That 4, 4'-bi-l-naphthol (I) is formed has been sho~ n,~-~ but it was only recently5 that a second product was isolated from this reaction and assigned the structure 2, 2'-bi-l-naphthol (V)(mp 220). 6 The evidence presented in support of structure V by Ioffe was convincing but not conclusive.
