The synthesis of the isomeric 6-(2-and 3-furyl)-3-methyl-L oxopiperidines from 0'- oxocarboxylic acids was recently des-cribed1. The search for a more convenient synthesis offurylpiperidones led us to investigate the possibility of introducing an aromatic or hcteroaromatic system into 2-methylglutarimides (1), in connection with a planned synthesis of quinolizidine alkaloids.
