Abstract

2-Naphthol and naphthalenediols react with methylenemalononitrile, generated in situ from reaction of formaldehyde and malononitrile, to yield naphthopyrans and naphthodipyrans. 5- Hydroxynaphtho [2, 1-b] pyrans reacted further with methylenemalononitrile to yield naphthodipyrans.
