Reaction of 2-propenylmagnesium bromide with (VIII) gave (XII). Attempted dehydration of this with several acidic reagents gave chiefly p-cymene, but the action of phosphorus oxychloride and pyridine at 0'under nitrogen produced a mixture of hydrocarbons, g. 1. c. analysis of which indicated the presence of p-cymene (30%),(I)(25%), and (11)(40%). Methanesulphonyl chloride and pyridine on (XII) gave a better yield of (I)(60%).
