Abstract: Previous investigations have indicated that the thiamine pyrophosphate-dependent enzymatic decarboxylation of pyruvate to acetaldehyde proceeds via the decarboxylation of 2-(l-carboxy-l-hydroxyethyl)-thiamine pyrophosphate (Ia) to 2-(l-hydroxyethyl) thiamine pyrophosphate (IIa).
