The NMR spectrum of the triphenylmethyldimer taken in CH2Cl2 at− 22° is only compatible with the structure of Jacobson's dimer. Oxidation of solutions of triphenylmethyl and its dimer with SbCl5 leads after hydrolysis to different yields of 4-trityl-triphenylcarbinol as a function of reaction parameters. The formation of 4-trityl-triphenylcarbinol under the above conditions is taken as chemical evidence for the Jacobson structure of the triphenylmethyl dimer.
