In the course of a study of new methods for the dehydrogenation of steroid 3-ketones, it was found that the treatment of A4-3-ketosteroids with chloranil (tetrachloro-$-benzoquinone) can afford A6-dehydro or A1t6-bisdehydro derivatives depending on the reaction conditions employed.
