Abstract

Gallium and gallium dichloride are effective reductants for the low-temperature (500° C), solid-state reduction of TaCl5 to hexatantalum chloride clusters which can be conveniently isolated as the hydrated cluster Ta6 (μ-Cl) 12Cl2 (OH2) 4⊙ 4H2O in> 90% yields by aqueous Soxhlet extraction.
