Abstract Secondary phosphines R2PH or RR'PH (R and R'= alkyl, cycloalkyl) have been obtained in good yields by preparing lithium phosphide from lithium, red phosphorus and t- butylalcohol in liquid ammonia and subsequent alkylation in the presence of alkali amide, prepared in the same flask.
