Abstract-o-Acylaminobenzylidenephosphoranes lead to indoles in good yield by an intramolecular Wittig reaction with the amide carbonyl group. Mechanistic aspects are discussed. A general method is described for the synthesis of indoles from o-nitrobenzyl bromides and o-aminobenzyl alcohols.
