Abstract

The C 5 (CN) 5 − anion was prepared in multigram quantities as a trimethylammonium salt from tetracyano-1,4-dithiin 10 via the method of Simmons. 11 [HNMe 3 ][C 5 (CN) 5 ] was converted to the silver salt by simple metathesis. Treatment of triphenylmethyl bromide with Ag[C 5 (CN) 5 ] in toluene gave the trityl salt [Ph 3 C][C 5 (CN) 5 ] which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1 H and 13 C NMR, and X-ray crystallography.‡ Reaction of this trityl salt ...
