During an investigation2 of the distribution of hydroxynaphthoquinones between ether and aqueous buffers, it was accidentally observed that a dilute (20 mg./100 cc.) solution of hydrolapachols (I, R=(CH&CH (CH&) in wet ether decomposed on standing for a week in a flask on a desk top with formation of a more hydrophilic quinone.
