The reversible addition of glyoxal (ethanedial) and S(IV) to form glyoxal monobisulfite (GMBS) was studied spectro- photometrically over the pH range of 0.7-3.3. Far from equilibrium, the rate of GMBS formation is given by d[GMBS]/dt (k1,a pa1 + kz.appaz)[CzH20~ 1 [S(IV)19 where [CZH~OZI = [(CH(OH)z)zI + [CH(OH)zCHOl + [CHOCHOI, [S(IV)l ... = [H28.SO2] + [HS03-] + [SO3'-], aI = [HS03-]/[S(IV)], and aZ = [S032-]/[S(IV)].
