The Friedel-Crafts condensation of 3-methoxyphthalic anhydride (IV) gave predominantly 3- methoxy-2-aroylbenzoic acid types. On employment of anhydrous aluminum chloride as a condensing agent, this tendency was exclusive. The Grignard reaction of IV also gave a similar result.
