Abstract Anion-induced 1H—NMR signal displacements provide a method to evaluate the position of the positive charge in 8-dimethylamino-naphth-1-yl-phosphonium salts and thus to decide whether the amino-phosphonium formula or a tricyclic ammonium formula with pentacovalent phosphorus is adequate.
