Abstract

In a recent paper by Kaufmann and AdamsId the reduction of furfural by means of hydrogen and platinum black made from platinum oxide was studied. It was found that the initial product was fury1 carbinol. This upon further reduction yielded four products; tetrahydrofuryl carbinol, pentane-diol-1, 2, pentane-diol-1, 5 and n-amyl alcohol.
