The alkali-lability of certain phosphate esters, 2a in particular those of some carbohydrates,* b contrasts sharply with the stability of most alkyl phosphate^.^ Unlike lability in carbohydrate sulfonates, phosphate ester-lability does not involve anhydro compound formation; in many ways a closer parallel is shown with 0-alkyl-and 0-a1 kylidenehexoses.
