Abstract: The ground-state torsional angles between the planes of the benzene rings in 2', 6'- dihalogenated derivatives of 4-bromobiphenyl were determined from the NMR spectra of these compounds dissolved in nematic liquid crystalline solvents. The angles were found to be 68, 70, and 77O for the chloro, bromo, and iodo derivatives, respectively. These values compare with 35O for this angle when the 2 'and 6'positions are not substituted.
