Abstract

Under very mild conditions heterocyclic secondary enamines react efficiently with malonyl chloride to produce hydroxylated 2-pyridinone-fused heterocycles. The reactions of enamines with oxalyl chloride, however, afford varied products depending upon the heterocyclic structure of the enamine.
