Abstract

The chiral 1,1′-diaryl-1,2-ethanediols, especially diols containing one pyridyl heterocycle, are important intermediates in our drug development programs. We anticipated that these diols could be prepared efficiently via a Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation 1. and 2. of 1,1′-diarylalkenes (Scheme 1).
