Abstract The synthesis of a number of antibacterial 3, 5-disubstituted pyrazoles and isoxazoles starting from beta-diketones and a hydrazine or hydroxylamine respectively is described. A furyl or 5-nitrofuryl group was always one of the substituents. The nitration of the furan ring could be performed at any stage.
