Abstract: 19F chemical shifts are reported for a series of 4-substituted 3, 5- dimethylfluorobenzenes (I); comparison of these values with ones for para-substituted fluorobenzenes show differences that can be attributed to steric hindrance of mesomerism. Combined with the arguments of part VII, 4 these results suggest that the r-inductive effect is not important, A polarization being mainly due to mesomeric interactions. The proton nmr ...
