In connection with an investigation of the line widths of nmr signals due to tertiary methyl groupsl-4 we wished to synthesize a number of pairs of isomeric title compounds. During the course of this work two independent groups5-7 described the synthesis of some of the compounds prepared by us. The transformations described here allowed us to determine the configurations in the m7hole series by interrelation with both sets of published assignments.
