2-Methoxythiophene was obtained by a copper-catalyzed Williamson synthesis. The ether function was found to overcome appreciably the directive influence of the hetero-atom in orienting some attack by electrophilic reagents on the 3-position; radical reagents reacted only with the 5-position.
