The reaction of acetylenedicarboxylic esters with a variety of nucleophiles selected by reference to a general scheme (I) affords a number of heterocyclic systems, including pyrroles, furans, thiophenes, quinolines, pyrrolinones, and thiazolinones among the cases investigated.
