A series of 6-, 9-, and 15-membered monostilbeno crown ethers (3) and 18-, 24-, and 30- membered distilbeno crown ethers (4, some of which are new compounds, were synthesized in the base-induced reactions of benzoin (1) with oligoethylene glycol ditosylates (2a-d) in homogeneous and heterogeneous solutions. The template effect is shown to be effective in controlling product yields and 413 ratios.
