Abstract: The reaction between cis-dibromoethylene and triethylamine in dimethylformamide (DMF) is one of elimination rather than displacement. The probable first product is monobromoacetylene. The activation parameters for this second-order reaction are AH*= 18.1 kcal/mol and AS*=-32 eu.
