Abstract

Unlike carboxylic acids, phosphonic acids cannot be esterified by direct reaction with alcohols. Esterification is usually accomplished by converting the phosphonic acid to the corresponding acid chloride which will react with an alcohol in the presence of base to yield the phosphonate ester. 2
