Abstract

Abstract. The 3-alkoxy-4-methylbenzaldehydes (3a-e) can be obtained by alkylation of the hydroxy compound 1. Reaction with aniline yields the azomethines (4a-e) which enter in an alkaline medium a polycondensation to the title cornpounds 5a-e. Contrary to the 2- substituted educts, a competitive intramolecular condensation process is principally not possible. Benzoylation of 1 furnisches 3f.
