Abstract: Various “stiff “diphenylbutadienes with the phenyls held rigid by saturated chains of 2-4 carbons connecting the 2-position of phenyl to the polyene unit have been prepared, and their photophysics explored. The synthesis entailed a combination of Wittig reactions and the Wadsworth-Emmons modification.
