Abstract

Sulfonate esters of primary and secondary alcohols react rapidly with potassium t-butoxide in dimethyl sulfoxide to give alkenes and alkyl t-butyl ethers. The reaction is complete within 30 min. at 20-25'for 0.5 M solutions of the ester. Esters of cyclic and secondary acyclic alcohols give about 80% yields of alkenes and no appreciable quantities of ethers.
