Oxyluciferin, 2-(6′-hydroxybenzothiazol-2′-yl)-4-hydroxythiazole (I), a proposed emitter in firefly bioluminescence, was synthesized and identified as the emitter in firefly chemiluminescence. It was also shown that oxyluciferin (I) can be converted chemically to firefly luciferin.
