Abstract

Alkyl thiols and silyl-substituted alkyl thiols have been synthesized from the corresponding alkyl halides by the action of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia or alkyl amines under autogenous pressures in methanol. Alkyl halides converted to thiols in greater than 90% yield include hexyl, dodecyl, benzyl, trimethoxysilylpropyl, and methyldimethoxysilylpropyl chlorides, and 1, 2-dibromoethane.
