Treatment of 2, 2, 3-trimethyl-3-pentanol with hydrogen chloride at 0" leads to the formation of 3-chloro-2, 2, 3-trimethyl-pentane. In both cases the products were established from rate of hydrolysis data and melting points to be essentially pure compounds, free of detectable amounts of any rearranged chlorides.
